The Render Safe operation is the ultimate in unknown radiation problems, ranging from nothing at all to the worst thing imaginable. Any material information that can be obtained about the unknown object is critical in aiding the render safe problem. Over the past decade or so advancements in fast neutron/gamma ray detection technology have resulted in the development of new capabilities that could be game changers for render safe operations, but the power requirements of fast detection electronics were beyond hand-held capabilities. This project is designing and building a prototype, man-portable, deployable and configurable, fast detection system able to collect fast neutron and gamma ray data in order to discern critical information about an unknown object.
