ORNL Internship Programs
ORNL sponsors numerous education programs which can be leveraged by DNN consortiums’ students seeking research opportunities as well as for students interested technical and professional opportunities.
Internship Opportunities for Undergraduate Students
The Undergraduate Research Student Internship (URSI) Program at ORNL is designed to complement academic programs by utilizing the unique resources and mentorship provided by ORNL’s world-class scientists and engineers. The Pathways to Computing Internship Program (PCIP) provides undergraduate students with experiential opportunities in computer science, computational science, and mathematics. ORNL’s Technical and Professional Internships (TPI) Program provides opportunities to engage with ORNL projects and connect with researchers and professional staff.
Terms for URSI, PCIP and TPI:
- Spring/fall:16 weeks, full-time or part-time (PCIP is not available for spring/fall)
- Summer: 10 weeks, full-time
Eligibility for URSI, PCIP, and TPI:
Undergraduate or recent associate’s or bachelor’s graduates (within 2 years)
- 3.0+ GPA on a 4.0 scale
- 18 years or older at the start of the internship
- U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (Not required for PCIP)
Benefits under URSI, PCIP, and TPI:
- Weekly stipend of $650 to $ 750 per week
- Housing assistance provided
- Inbound/outbound travel reimbursement of up to $1000 for round-trip domestic travel if the student’s
- permanent address is over 50 miles from ORNL

Internship Opportunities for Graduate Students (Masters and Doctoral Students)
The Graduate Research Student Internship (GRSI) Program at ORNL provides unique research opportunities for current master’s and doctoral students by utilizing the unique resources and mentorship provided by ORNL’s world-class research scientists and engineers. The Technical and Professional Internships (TPI) Program provides graduate and professional opportunities to engage with technical and business professional supporting the management and operations of research projects and activities.
Terms for GRSI and TPI:
- Spring/fall:16 weeks, full-time
- Summer: 10 weeks, full-time
Eligibility for GRSI and TPI:
- Graduate and professional students in a master’s (MS, MBA, MPH, MPH, etc.) or doctoral degree program (PhD, JD, etc.)
- 3.0+ GPA on a 4.0 scale
- 18 years or older at the start of the internship
- U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
Benefits under GRSI and TPI:
- Weekly stipend of $750 to $ 950 per week
- Housing assistance provided
- Inbound/outbound travel reimbursement of up to $1000 for round-trip domestic travel if the student’s permanent address is over 50 miles from ORNL
