This project explores the use of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) to develop a Unique Identifier (UID) that provides robust tamper indication with remote readout capabilities. A FBGs spectral signature is modified by the application of mechanical stresses and this is the basis for the UID. It will include multiple FBGs in a single device with random stresses generated both in the device fabrication and during application to a monitored item. With a sufficient number of FBGs in a single UID, this should create a robustly unique spectral signature, that would permanently change if the device were tampered with.
