The capabilities of certain commercial-off-the-shelf, power monitoring instruments (COTSPI) will be investigated to determine applicability to MPD mission areas. Power lines offer communications channels that can be utilized as part of a measurement system. With the increasing reliance of modern society on power systems, and the increasing complexity of the power grid around the world, sophisticated COTSPI have been developed that offer enhanced ability to monitor the health and performance of the physical system.
