DOE Internship Programs

ORNL along with other DOE National Laboratories supports DOE sponsored STEM internship programs. DNN consortia students may leverage these programs to pursue internships and research collaborations at ORNL.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) Program

The DOE SULI program encourages undergraduates to enter STEM careers relevant to DOE’s mission by providing R&D experiences under the guidance of world-leading scientists and engineers at national laboratories like ORNL. 

Terms:

  • Spring/fall:16 weeks, full-time
  • Summer: 10 weeks, full-time

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate students or recent associate’s or bachelor’s graduates (within 2 years) with a 3.0+ GPA
  • 18 years or older at the start of the internship
  • U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Additional requirements are listed on the SULI eligibility website

Benefits:

  • Weekly stipend of $650 and housing assistance
  • Inbound/outbound travel reimbursement of up to $500 to and from ORNL if the student’s permanent address is over 50 miles from the lab

Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program

The SCGSR program prepares graduate students for STEM careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission by providing graduate thesis research opportunities under the guidance of world-leading scientists and engineers at national laboratories like ORNL.

Term:

  • 3–12 consecutive months.

Eligibility:

  • PhD candidacy
  • US citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Locate and confirm an ORNL collaborator
  • Additional requirements are listed on the SCGSR eligibility website

Benefits:

  • Monthly living stipend of up to $3,600
  • Inbound/outbound travel reimbursement of up to $2,000 for round-trip domestic travel to and from
  • ORNL if the student’s permanent address is more than 50 miles from the lab
